Old Town, Old Concrete
Calvert is a Robertson County town on State Highway 6, about nine miles north of Hearne, and as concrete contractors we expect much of the work in Calvert to involve replacing or repairing concrete that has been in place a long time. Investors bought the townsite and platted it in January 1868, the first trains arrived in 1869, and by 1900 the town had 3,322 residents. The 2020 census counted 962. A town that peaked more than a century ago is a town full of older homes.
What old concrete tends to look like
Concrete of that age commonly shows:
- No reinforcement, or rusted mesh lying at the bottom of the slab.
- Thin sections that break under modern vehicles.
- Lifted panels where mature tree roots have grown underneath.
- Old patches layered on top of each other, each one a different color.
- Settlement near downspouts where water has washed out the base for years.
None of this means everything must go. We decide panel by panel. A walk with two lifted sections can often be fixed by replacing just those two, after we deal with the roots or the drainage that lifted them.
An antiques town with a historic district
Wikipedia says Calvert has enjoyed success as an antiques capital for about 35 years, and that by 1871 the town claimed the largest cotton gin in the world, and the Calvert Historic District appears in its listing with a 2018 date. Downtown buildings and older homes such as the Parrish House and the Barton Home give the town its character. For work in front of older homes, we keep finishes simple and widths in proportion so new concrete does not look out of place.
Working around mature trees
Old towns have old trees, and Calvert is no exception. Roots lift walks and driveways over decades. When we replace a lifted section, we look at what is underneath before deciding how to proceed. Options include rerouting a walk slightly, bridging over roots with a thicker, better reinforced section, or installing a root barrier along the new edge. We do not cut large structural roots without talking it through with you, since that can harm the tree.
Rain, clay and drainage
The Handbook of Texas describes Robertson County as flat to gently rolling, in the Claypan area of east central Texas, with light-colored loamy or sandy surfaces over clayey or loamy subsoils. It records about 38 inches of rain a year. A claypan slows water from soaking in, so runoff spreads across the surface and finds the lowest spot, which is often the edge of a slab or a step.
When we replace concrete in Calvert, we fix the reasons it failed:
1. Dig out soft, wet base and replace it with compacted material. 2. Re-set the slope so water drains away from the house. 3. Extend downspouts past the slab or pipe them away. 4. Add rebar and dowels so the new panel stays level with its neighbors.

Calvert Questions
Do I have to replace my whole walk if a few panels are broken?
Not usually. We can saw-cut out the broken panels, fix the base and pour new sections doweled into the old ones. If most panels have failed, replacement makes more sense.
Why did my old concrete sink next to the downspout?
Years of roof water washing out the base under the slab is a common cause. When we replace that section, we also move the water away so it does not happen again.
Can new concrete match the color of my old walk?
New concrete starts lighter and darkens with age. We can get closer with a finish that matches, but an exact color match is not realistic right away.
